 Director of Communications

We are recruiting on behalf of a Toronto based nonprofit organization for a Director of Communications.

 

Position Summary

The company is going through a rejuvenation and looking for an entrepreneurial spirit who is passionate about sport, recreation, health and fitness, health promotion, and physical activity. The Director of Communications is responsible for planning, development and implementation of the organization’s communications strategies, including all public relations, crisis communications, content development, and thought leadership activities. This individual is responsible for planning, organizing, staffing, training, and directly managing their team and agency partners.  The Director of Communications also provides strategic communications expertise, advice and guidance to partner organizations, funders and leadership team for the purposes of building the organization’s recognition and visibility, while ensuring consistent messaging on a nationwide basis.

Position Responsibilities

Communications Strategy

  • Leads public relations and thought leadership strategy and implementation for the organization and the organization’s partner programs and initiatives;
  • Advises on issues and opportunities related to communications and thought leadership, including the development of communications plans, knowledge translation plans and knowledge products;
  • Ensures consistent messages and voice of the organization across all public and stakeholder communication;
  • Develops, writes, edits and/or directs the development of communications content for PR, marketing and corporate communications materials;
  • Develops, writes, edits and/or directs the development of content and messaging to support other organizational communications related to government relations, sponsorship, thought leadership etc.; 
  • Establishes and manages relationships with organizations to help support ongoing communications partnerships;
  • Works with Advisory Groups, Public Affairs Manager and Knowledge Translation Manager to identify and communicate latest physical activity and sport-related statistics, research and new.

Leadership and Strategic Planning

  • Confers with VP Marketing and Communications to develop business objectives, develop organizational policies, coordinate functions and operations and establish responsibilities and procedures for attaining objectives;
  • Reviews and evaluates the organization’s communications performance on a continuing basis and establishes proper measures of performance, and when necessary, provides direction for modification in work plans or implementation of contingency plans in accordance with prevailing business conditions.

Lead the Communications Team

  • Manages the human resources for the Communications Team including: recruitment, hiring, orientation, training/professional development, employee relations and performance management of all team members;
  • Monitors staff resourcing on Communications Team is optimal and makes adjustments as required.

Oversight of Public Relations and Agency Suppliers

  • Manages the overall public relations agency relationships to ensure that all supplier communications deliverables are met on time, to the highest standards, and on budget;
  • Manages other content agencies and freelancers;
  • Manages budgets, contracts and agency reviews;
  • Acts as the main spokesperson for media relations.
Qualifications and Skills
  • University Degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or related discipline;
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive strategic PR and Communications experience;
  • Strong background in public relations, media relations, communications, writing, and project management preferred; 
  • Excellent research, writing, organizational and interpersonal skills as well as intimate knowledge of the news media required; 
  • Solid grounding in knowledge translation, digital content and multi-channel marketing and communications programs strongly preferred;
  • Ability to command a strong presence in front of the media as a spokesperson of the organization;
  • Ability to interpret complex research, academic and government sources and translate into clear communications for a variety of target audiences;
  • Familiarity with physical activity and sport sector(s), the operation of not-for-profit organizations, as well as understanding of government and corporate sectors an asset;
  • Ability to work in a team and independently;
  • Fluency in French is an asset.
