Retail Strategist 

We are recruiting on behalf of a global agency for a Retail Strategist. 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Uses strategic planning techniques, processes and tools to lead the development of relevant and inspirational creative briefs that solve client challenges.  Owns and maintains all shopper and retailer knowledge and intelligence.  Leverages this knowledge and expertise during the planning process to customize client programs to needs of specific retailers and their customers.

Core job Functions:

  • Serve as the expert for assigned clients on top 10-20 Canadian retailers, understanding the retailers’ customers, priorities, strategies and ensuring client programs reach and resonate with customers and drive behavior change
    • Represent the voice of the retailer and its shoppers when determining communication priorities
    • Provide internal teams and client with regularly updated intelligence for top retailer’s go-to-market strategies
    • Guide how retailer intelligence is used by the internal team in planning client marketing initiatives
    • Create or support strategy director in creating inspiring, relevant creative briefs for assigned clients and projects
      • Distill important and relevant data into a background summary that informs the creative brief
      • Use research and strategy tools to gather information about the shopper/consumer and culture
      • Work with strategy generalists to:
        • define the client’s challenge, business opportunity and shopper/consumer persona
        • identify consumer/shopper mindset and behavior
        • uncover pivotal insight
        • develop marketing strategy
  • Support briefing the creative team with channel (retailer) specific intelligence
  • Evaluate creative concepts, ensuring they are on strategy and meet client objectives
  • Present retailer strategy section of program ideas and creative concepts presentation to client
  • Develop/customize strategies and tactics for specific retailers as needed
  • Support client’s annual planning activities and ad hoc requests by leveraging client research, secondary research tools, social observations and other agency intelligence to inform understanding of the category, channel, culture, consumer/shopper (i.e. mindset, shopping/buying behavior, media/message impact, etc.) and overall trends
  • Use research and planning tools and resources to monitor consumer and retailer news and trends and share with broader strategy team and assigned client team(s); help inform agency POVs and proposals by researching and providing supporting insights and facts
  • Work with senior strategists to conduct and analyze research related to programs and ad hoc requests; combine key case studies into general support documentation
  • Manage agency’s process for competitive, category and channel reviews for assigned clients
    • Source relevant data points
    • Manage the scope and deliverable
    • Compile learning summary and report findings
    • Socialize learnings across agency teams
    • Partner with senior strategists to develop planning bids and proposals as needed, including drafting proposals for internal survey projects; coordinating cost estimates, project plans and timelines; and managing supplier lists
      • Enter time reports at minimum once a week and expense reports within 10 days of incurred expense
      • Handle other duties as assigned by supervisor
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in advertising, marketing, communications, behavioral science field (i.e. sociology, psychology, anthropology) or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 2-4 years’ experience in strategic planning or related field; preferably at an agency
  • Proficiency with planning database tools and systems such as Simmons, MRI, Kantar, or equivalent, able to identify appropriate planning tool based on situational need
  • Working knowledge of key priorities, retailer-specific guidelines, and strategic initiatives of top US retailers
  • Knowledge of the client’s business, objectives, products and category
  • Able to communicate clearly, thoroughly, succinctly and in a timely manner both verbally and in writing; follows up on outstanding issues; asks relevant questions
  • Able to build relationships and collaborate across teams, departments and vendors to successfully accomplish work
  • Proactively seeks out opportunities to help unprompted and/or takes on additional work during lull periods and partners with account to identify opportunities to help address new client needs
  • Able to analyze results, interpret data, draw sound conclusions, and develop insightful and actionable recommendations
  • Strong attention to detail and organization, demonstrated through actions such as:
    • Effectively proofing own and others work to ensure accuracy
    • Actively and effectively managing timelines and deliverables of multiple projects and ad hoc requests simultaneously to meet pre-determined deadlines
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
