Chief Executive Officer

Our client is a leader in the casual restaurant industry operating in over 280 locations in North and South America. They are currently seeking a CEO to manage and lead the organization, based in Toronto, Ontario Canada.  As CEO you will be responsible for the supervision of the overall business strategy and success. 

Your role will be crucial to the success of the company, as you will be providing the strategic directions to the team across the entire company.

The successful candidate will currently be in an executive leadership role within the Foodservice channel with demonstrated operational success and experience in the restaurant industry.

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND CHARACTERISTICS

You are a talented, passionate leader with experience driving outcomes in fast-paced business environments. You have excellent people leadership skills, leverage your capabilities and those of your peers, business partners, associates and influencing other leaders. You are a team player with strong communication, time management, and decision- making skills.

Knowledge in the following areas is required: human services, finance and personnel, oral and written communications, planning and evaluation, and governance. A high level of personal skills is required to make formal, persuasive presentations to groups and to deal effectively with people from all segments of the community. The individual must be comfortable with diversity and respectful of a wide range of faiths, beliefs and experiences.

Leading change: The CEO possesses the skills and implements the functions of a leader. You share the company’s values, mission and vision. You consistently display integrity.

The CEO is action-oriented and innovative. You translate broad goals into achievable steps. You anticipate and solve problems, take advantage of opportunities, are a self-starter and a team player.

Business savvy: As the company’s leader this position requires an individual with knowledge of and experience in management and administration. The position requires demonstrated experience in integrating and coordinating diverse areas of management.

REQUIREMENTS OF CEO CANDIDATE

 1)      Legal Compliance

  • Experience in food industry leasing is preferred. 
  • QSR experience ideal. 
  • Corporate experience preferred (not franchise).

2)   Demonstrated managerial and Executive attributes

  • Provides general oversight of the company’s activities, manages the day-to-day operations, and assures a smoothly functioning, efficient organization.
  • Exceptional listening and questioning skills. 
  • Deep and thorough understanding of the company and ability to properly represent the company’s approach and policies to the team.
  • Proven ability to successfully execute corporate initiatives and systems.
  • Excellent judge of character and ability to read situations and people. 
  • Not afraid to deliver bad news when required. 
  • Experienced and adept at knowing subordinates’ work intimately (i.e. thoroughly familiar with what each team member is doing, not just a high-level understanding).
  • Excellent technical knowledge in each area of the business as to earn each subject matter expert’s respect.
  • Ability to influence and inspire a team of people who have worked together for 10+ years.
  • Ability to be a change agent in order to implement new systems as well as updates to existing processes for people who have been doing the same job for 10+ years. 

3)      Natural leader

  • Excellent technical knowledge in each area of the business as to earn each subject matter expert’s respect.
  • Ability to influence and inspire a team of people who have worked together for 10+ years.
  • Ability to be an agent of change in order to implement new systems as well as updates to existing processes for people who have been doing the same job for 10+ years

4)      Systems-oriented person  

  • Experience developing and implementing processes and systems. 
  • Experience in applying systems administration to manage personnel, workflow and project milestones.

5)      Proven experience managing an executive leadership team with multi-disciplinary areas of expertise.

  • Resolve conflicting priorities to achieve win-win results. 
  • Demonstrated ability to overcome conflict / objections. 

6)      Strategic thinker

  • Proven ability to accurately anticipate the result (ability to think things through to the end). 
  • A results oriented, creative problem solver.

7)      Self-starter

  • Self- motivated. 
  • Leads by example. 
  • Strong communication skills. 

8)      Strong analytical skills in business and financial matters

  • Ability to apply business acumen when analyzing deals, leases, and projects.
  • Able to balance competing interests.

9)      Proven ability to analyze large amount of information in minute detail, and to present executive summaries succinctly, capturing the most pertinent and relevant information which can be easily understood by Executives.

  • Attention to detail is a must.

10)  Experience working in a mid-size / small company (rather than large company with well established, defined objectives and policies).

  • Accepting of a traditionally entrepreneurial philosophy (versus established public company),
    • e.g. not always clear lines, not always clear chain of command, moving targets, not always guided by “4 corners”.

3)       Mission, Policy and Planning

  • Helps the Board determine the company’s values, mission, vision, and short- and long-term goals.
  • Helps the Board monitor and evaluate company’s relevancy to the community, its effectiveness, and its results.
  • Keeps the Board fully informed on the condition of company and on all the important factors influencing it.
  • Identifies problems and opportunities and addresses them; brings those which are appropriate to the Board and/or its committees; and, facilitates discussion and deliberation.
  • Informs the Board and its committees about trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy-making. Recommends policy positions.

4)      Governance

  • Helps the Board articulate its own role and accountabilities as well as that of its committees and individual members. You also help evaluate performance.
  • Functional understanding of lease plan drawings.
  • Works with the Board and Executive Chair to enable the Board to fulfill its governance functions and facilitates the optimum performance by the Board, its committees and individual Board members.
  • Working with the Board President/Chair, you will focus Board attention on long-range strategic issues.
  • Manages the Board’s due diligence process to assure timely attention to core issues.
  • Works with the Board officers and committee chairs to get the best thinking and involvement of each Board member and to stimulate each Board member to give his or her best.

5)      Travel

  • Potential for Frequent travel.
  • If travel is required, it may be on short notice.

6)      Location

  • The successful candidate must be based in the Greater Toronto Area.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required, MBA preferred.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in a senior management position, preferably as Chief Executive Officer.
  • Strong financial acumen.
  • Proven leadership and experience within the North American restaurant space.
  • Can make decisions in a “directive style”.
  • Has led an organization through growth and acquisition.
  • Is the “glue” that brings teams, departments, and business units together.
  • Ability to bridge both internal and external relationships.
  • Committed to results.
